Week 9. Refutation and Concession

1. What is my thesis?
  • There is another level of information processing called 'preconscious' between conscious processing and unconscious processing.

2. What is the opposite position?
  • Brain does only two types of information processing - conscious and unconscious processing.
3. What arguments can I anticipate?
  • Preconscious is an ambiguous concept.
  • There are little researches that can support your argument.
4. How will I counter those arguments?

  • Preconscious is not an ambiguous concept. It is more of accurate process that connects the ambiguous boundary surrounded of a conscious sphere and unconscious sphere. It is like a middle step of them.(but closer to conscious awareness.)
  • It isn't true. At first, authoritative researcher, Sigmund Freud claimed that there is a level of preconscious. Also, researcher, C.G. Jung established and extended his theory based on the concept of 'preconsious'. He claimed personal unconsciousness which is similar concept to preconscious.

My Refutation and Concession

  • Some people would disagree with my argument. They will refine brain's information processing only in two ways. In other words, they will argue that brain does only two types of information processing - conscious and unconscious processing.-
  • They can argue like, 'Preconscious is an ambiguous concept. So it is difficult to accept and adapt.' or 'There are little researches that can support your argument. It is not logical.' However, these are not true.
  • First, preconscious is not an ambiguous concept. It is more of accurate process that connects the ambiguous boundary surrounded of a conscious sphere and unconscious sphere. It is like a middle step of them.(but closer to conscious awareness.)
  • Second, an authoritative researcher, Sigmund Freud claimed that there is a level of preconscious. Also, researcher, C.G. Jung established and extended his theory based on the concept of 'preconsious'. He claimed personal unconsciousness which is similar concept to preconscious.
  • Moreover, aside from their theory, when you think certain situation, you can easily perceive what preconscious is. For instance, it is hard to answer what did you do last week on this time. We should think about it quite long time, not immediately can aware.

    2. More examples

    2-1. forensic hypnosis
Forensic hypnosis, once was considered middle between science and ritual, now is accepted as an an official forensic science. Experts who are in this field, say that the reason that people can't remember the memory is not failure of information storing but fail to elicit it. As a result, forensic hypnosis helps people elicit hidden information in our subconscious that we  can hardly elicit in daily lives.

    • support 1. cases
    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdW6-ybHGdQ
    • For instance, in Korea, there has been many kind of hit- and- run accidents. In some cases, the person who were in that accident was able to spoke all the traits of car. Based on these information, police officers could catch a criminal.
In other cases, whole family who lived in Jeongeup-si were murdered by a criminal in 2009. However, the oldest son who was coming to home, had encountered that criminal and his witness in hypnotherapy state, considerably contributed to finding the criminal. Therefore, the montage of the criminal was made accurately and very specifically. It became a crucial evidence. As a result, forensic hypnosis helps people elicit hidden information in our subconscious that we  can hardly elicit in daily lives.
    • breaking points...> In 1999, this was introduced in Korea firstly and acknowledged in 2013 officially. Although the experts who are in the field help other retrieve their memories about accidents and it significantly contributes to resolve the cues, however unfortunately this way of rhetoric isn't accepted as a single legal ground.
    • support 2. experts' opinions

    • Gale Sman and Marcobitz who were American psychologists found that 55.3% of the 21 people in the experimental studies had recalled the information in hypnotic state better. Such as the traumatic experience, child sexual abuse has usually been repressed by the defense mechanisms to avoid the pain can not recall well. However, In a study of Herman and Schatz has lifted a suppression that through age regression, the possibility that hypnosis can restore the memory was founded.
    • ★Cognitive Interviewing : more advanced form of a forensic hypnosis. more effective and credible. Also can avoid the trap of hypnosis (confusion between real experiences and imagination, vulnerable to leading questions)
    3. Opposite opinions , critics
    1. criticsThey refine brain's information processing only in two ways. In other words, they will argue that brain does only two types of information processing - conscious and unconscious processing.- They argue that 'Preconscious is an ambiguous concept. So it is difficult to accept and adapt.'
    2. case of America : In the case of America, many judges have pointed out the possibility that witness can misremember the fact in hypnosis state, although it really was an imagination or story of the books. Therefore, after these judgments, prosecutors who try to submit a result of hypnosis as an evidence, had to reveal all the process of forensic hypnosis clearly.

    * In my draft, all "inclined writing" represents that is a quotation.

The level of Preconscious processing exists. - second draft

Are you able to recall the words that you spoke two weeks ago? Or Have you ever recall some memories of your childhood while sleeping? Some may say "Yes." and Others may say "No." Then, here is another question. Is it a conscious memory or an unconscious memory? Many people will answer to former question quiet easily but they may have trouble in answering to latter question. The confusion stems from many ambiguous concepts and memories which cannot be classified easily as one of them. -conscious mind or unconscious mind- Even though general scientific academy simply defines the kind of memories into two fields however, I would like to argue that another level of information processing called 'preconscious' exists because our information processing is too sophisticated to divide it into only two ways. Therefore, Preconsious processing is thought to be located between conscious processing and unconscious processing.

At first, I would like to define what conscious means and unconscious means exactly. Both are the types of brain's information processing. Our brain perceives information or stores memories through different level of process. One process is conscious processing which means aware of and responding to one's surroundings or having knowledge of something. Another is unconscious processing which means not awake and aware of responding to one's environment or done of existing without one realizing. Since now, some researchers have divided the level of brain's processing into these two ways. However, as I mentioned above, information processing of human mind is not so easy to classify it in just two ways. Therefore, surely, another process would exist between them. That is 'Preconscious.'
Then, what is preconscious and how it affects to other information processing? I found the answer from Sigmund Freud's theory and plenty of cases such as hypnotherapy.(forensic hypnosis). These data show how our information processing is complicated and human mind is potential. Thus, Sigmund Freud defined the meaning of 'preconscious mind' in his article, as "a part of the mind that corresponds to ordinary memory. These memories are not conscious, but we can retrieve them to conscious awareness at any time." The point is 'retrieve' and 'awareness' even though most of people hardly realize it.

Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality includes more specific evidences which can support my argument. He explained human mind using ice berg metaphor. As we can see the picture below, conscious awareness is the tip of an iceberg, while the unconscious is showed by the ice hidden below the surface of the water. Between them, preconscious level exists. Below is the summary of Sigmund Freud's theory. This shows not only apparent differences between conscious and unconscious processing but also concept of preconscious which includes both traits but slightly closer to conscious.

    캡션 추가
    1. "The conscious mind includes everything that we are aware of. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think and talk about rationally. A part of this includes our memory, which is not always part of consciousness but can be retrieved easily at any time and brought into our awareness - this is the preconscious."

    2. "The preconscious mind is the part of the mind that represents ordinary memory. While we are not consciously aware of this information at any given time, we can retrieve it and pull it into consciousness when needed."

    3. "The unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that outside of our conscious awareness. Most of the contents of the unconscious are unacceptable or unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict. According to Freud, the unconscious continues to influence our behavior and experience, even though we are unaware of these underlying influences."

    - in 'Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality' -

Second, one good example that proves firmly the existence of preconscious is hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is an effective way of helping people make changes in their lives, like breaking a bad habit such as smoking, stress and anxiety and so on. Also, it helps people reach at their full potential surmounting their trauma. Interesting part is people who are in the state of hypnosis, can slowly address deep inner issues. It is similar to preconscious level because no one is able to recall their inner mind in the state of conscious and even in the unconscious state. Therefore, It is easy way to understanding preconscious that it plays a role as a kind of a gatekeeper between the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. It allows only certain information to pass through and come into conscious memory.

Technologically speaking, it is an useful way called forensic hypnosis, once was considered middle between science and ritual, now is accepted as an an official forensic science. Experts who are in this field say that the reason that people can't remember the memory is not failure of information storing but fail to elicit it.
For instance, in Korea, there has been many kind of hit- and- run accidents.

However, some people disagree with my argument. They refine brain's information processing only in two ways. In other words, they argue that brain does only two types of information processing - conscious and unconscious processing.- They argue that 'Preconscious is an ambiguous concept so it is difficult to accepted in science field.' In addition, although the experts who are in the field help other retrieve their memories about accidents and it significantly contributes to resolve the cues, however unfortunately this way of rhetoric isn't accepted as a single legal ground.

By the way, these critics have some flaws.
Firstly In the case of America, many judges have pointed out the possibility that witness can misremember the fact in hypnosis state, although it really was an imagination or story of the books. Therefore, after these judgments, prosecutors who try to submit a result of hypnosis as an evidence, had to reveal all the process of forensic hypnosis clearly. However, Gale Sman and Marcobitz who were American psychologists found that 55.3% of the 21 people in the experimental studies had recalled the information in hypnotic state better. Such as the traumatic experience, child sexual abuse has usually been repressed by the defense mechanisms to avoid the pain can not recall well. However, In a study of Herman and Schatz has lifted a suppression that through age regression, the possibility that hypnosis can restore the memory was founded.
Furthermore, though cognitive interviewing, which is one of the more advanced form of a forensic hypnosis, can give more credible information. Also it can avoid the trap of hypnosis at high possibilities. (confusion between real experiences and imagination, vulnerable to leading questions) In this way, the methods of eliciting potential memories are developed and developed. Therefore, the possibility of preconscious processing is unlimited and absolutely undeniable.

As a result preconscious plays a role as a gatekeeper between conscious processing and unconscious processing. Famous authoritative researcher Sigmund Freud and other researchers acknowledged that and several cases such as hypnosis also represents its existence. The reason why we should focus this issue is related to the development of human brain processing levels. In contemporary society, we have to remember lots of information and store memories. Thus, more accurate and advanced quality of human mind research is needed to prevent side effects or unexpected problems in information processing such as loss of memory. Therefore, setting a obvious standard or classification of information processing should be preceded.

Further, if human mind research academy officially accepts that preconscious exists, research of human mind will extend more and deepen. Also, researchers can have wider perspectives of studying human mind because preconscious processing includes more concept of human mind. Moreover, plenty of ambiguous concepts and memories can be explained more obviously.

In conclusion, preconscious level exists. It is not an ambiguous concept. It is more of accurate process that connects the ambiguous boundary surrounded of a conscious sphere and unconscious sphere. It is like a middle step of them. Also, an authoritative researcher, Sigmund Freud claimed that there is a level of preconscious exists. And researcher, C.G. Jung established and extended his theory based on the concept of 'preconscious'. He claimed personal unconsciousness which is similar concept to preconscious. Moreover, aside from their theory, when you think certain situation, you can easily perceive what preconscious is. For instance, it is hard to answer what did you do last week on this time. We should think about it quite long time, not immediately can aware.

Week 11. Self evaluation (finish making a strategy)

    Self evaluation & Strategy
    • First, I think I need more supporting details. Especially, I think I should research more about Sigmund Freud's theory because it is the base of my argument. Also, I need to paraphrase it more easily in order to increase reader's understanding.
    • Second, I think I should research other scientists' opinions which are opposite to my thesis. And I'll reinforce my argument through reputing them logically.
    • Third, I'll search more examples that adapt my argument. They would be examples in which we can find in our daily lives easily. Then,I'll establish more valid conclusion.
    1) My introduction is interesting and attractive.

    2) My narration needs to be easier. I had better paraphrase some terms and explain the situation more obviously.

    3) My confirmation is logical but readers may have trouble in understanding the theory. Therefore, I'll research more about theory and explain it easily. Also I had better mention other examples more.

    4) My reputation seems a little bit abstract. Hence, I'll try to find other scientists' opinions which are opposite to my thesis and repute it clearly.

    5) My conclusion is fine but if more exact example is added, it would become more credible.

    First draft final (finish)

The level of Preconscious processing exists.

Are you able to recall what you spoke about a few weeks ago? or Have you ever recall some memories of your childhood while sleeping? Some may say "Yes." and Others may say "No." Then, here is another question. Is it a conscious memory or an unconscious memory? Many people must answer to former question quiet easily but they must have trouble in answering to latter question. Then, where the problem stems from? It is because there are too many ambiguous concepts and memories which cannot be classified easily as one of them.(conscious or unconscious)
Hence, I argue that there is another level of information processing called 'preconscious' which is located between conscious processing and unconscious processing.

However, as I mentioned above, the concepts are too enormous and vast to define whole concepts in just two ways. Therefore, surely, another process would exist between two. It would be 'preconscious.'

Then, what is preconscious and how it affects to other information processing? According to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality, the preconscious mind is a part of the mind that corresponds to ordinary memory. These memories are not conscious, but we can retrieve them to conscious awareness at any time.

A good example that proves firmly the existence of preconscious is hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is an effective way of helping people make changes in their life, like breaking unwanted habits such as smoking, dealing with phobias, stress and anxiety and so on. Also, it helps people reach at their full potential overcoming their hidden trauma. Interesting part is a person who are in the state of hypnosis, can slowly address deep inner issues and using own natural inner resources to resolve them.

I will refer to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality more specifically. This theory absolutely supports my argument. He explained human mind using ice berg metaphor. Conscious awareness is the tip of the iceberg, while the unconscious is represented by the ice hidden below the surface of the water. Between then, preconscious exists. Below is the summary of Sigmund Freud's theory. This shows not only apparent differences between conscious and unconscious processing but also concept of preconscious which includes both traits.

    1. The conscious mind includes everything that we are aware of. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think and talk about rationally. Most of the contents of the unconscious are unacceptable or unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict. According to Freud, the unconscious continues to influence our behavior and experience, even though we are unaware of these underlying influences.

However, some people would disagree with my argument. They will refine brain's information processing only in two ways. In other words, they will argue that brain does only two types of information processing - conscious and unconscious processing.- They can argue like, 'Preconscious is an ambiguous concept. So it is difficult to accept and adapt.' or 'There are little researches that can support your argument. It is not logical.' However, these are not true.

First, preconscious is not an ambiguous concept. It is more of accurate process that connects the ambiguous boundary surrounded of a conscious sphere and unconscious sphere. It is like a middle step of them.(but closer to conscious awareness.) Second, an authoritative researcher, Sigmund Freud claimed that there is a level of preconscious. Also, researcher, C.G. Jung established and extended his theory based on the concept of 'preconsious'. He claimed personal unconsciousness which is similar concept to preconscious. Moreover, aside from their theory, when you think certain situation, you can easily perceive what preconscious is. Week 8. Conformation

    1. What is my thesis?
    • There is another level of information processing called 'preconscious' between conscious processing and unconscious processing.
    2. What types of source am I using to defend my thesis?
    • I used a prestigious expert's theory and some examples about the argument.
    3. Are my arguments mostly based on evidence, logic or emotion?

    • My arguments are mostly based on evidence. Sigmund Freud's theory and many other researchers' arguments are supporting my arguments.

    My Confirmation
    • At first, I would like to define what conscious means and unconscious means exactly. Both are the types of brain's information processing. Our brain perceives information or stores memories through different level of process. One process is conscious processing which means aware of and responding to one's surroundings or having knowledge of something. This shows not only apparent differences between conscious and unconscious processing but also concept of preconscious which includes both traits.

    1. The conscious mind includes everything that we are aware of. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think and talk about rationally. A part of this includes our memory, which is not always part of consciousness but can be retrieved easily at any time and brought into our awareness. Freud called this the preconscious.

Most of the contents of the unconscious are unacceptable or unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict. According to Freud, the unconscious continues to influence our behavior and experience, even though we are unaware of these underlying influences.

    Week 7. Narration

My persuasive argument thesis is :
    • There is another level of information processing called 'preconscious' between conscious processing and unconscious processing.
    1. People already know about
    • People may know about traits of conscious processing and unconscious processing already. For instance, conscious memory includes what people think or what people perceive immediately. On the other hand, unconscious memory includes immoral urges, violent motives and fear and so on. Those are inner, suppressed mind so that can't appear to outside.
    2. Research about my topic

    3. The implications of my argument
    • If human mind research academy accepts that preconscious exists, research of human mind will extend more and deepen. Also, researchers can have wider perspectives of studying human mind because preconscious processing includes more concept of human mind. Moreover, plenty of ambiguous concepts and memories can be explained more obviously.
My Narration (almost overlapped above implications)
    • People may know about traits of conscious processing and unconscious processing already. For instance, conscious memory includes what people think or what people perceive immediately. On the other hand, unconscious memory includes immoral urges, violent motives and fear and so on. Those are inner, suppressed mind so that can't appear to outside. However, they don't know what hidden process exists between two information processing types. That is, surely, preconscious.
    • The reason why we should focus this issue is related to the development of human brain processing levels. In contemporary society, we have to remember lots of information and store memories. Thus, more accurate and advanced quality of human mind research is needed to prevent side effects or unexpected problems in information processing such as loss of memory. Therefore, setting a obvious standard or classification of information processing should be preceded.

    Week 6. Introduction

Hence, I argue that there is another level of information processing called 'preconscious'

    Week 4&5. Articulation

    1) My argument

I want to argue that there is middle process between conscious processing and unconscious processing.
We can certainly distinguish two parts of brain's information processing. One is conscious processing. It includes making a plan or short term memory or thoughts. Another is unconscious processing. It includes unacceptable sexual desires or violent motives. However, concepts are too many to define just as these two parts. How about dreaming(during sleep time) or memories which we can hardly recall? Therefore, I have thought that there would be other levels of conscious and found the credible concept, 'preconscious'

    2) How I found my argument

My first research question was,  Is there any middle process between 'consciousness' and 'unconsciousness'? When I first thought about it, I couldn't assure that there is a middle process. Also, I wasn't sure even what the exact meaning of term.(conscious, preconscious, unconscious) So definitions of them and each traits helped me understand more exact information of human mind. And some authoritative professors' opinion, especially Sigmund Freud's theory supported my thinking firmly. Moreover, one empirical example of preconscious. (through Hypnosis)
As a result, I was able to assure that the middle level of information processing exists.

    3) New research questions

I have several questions that need to be resolved.

    1) What are the more applicable examples that prove preconsious?
    2) Can people feel differences between conscious and unconscious? or Is it an individual difference?
    3) What is an opposite claim?

I'll continue browsing the internet and searching articles about human mind. And I'll reference related books.

    4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler

My argument has deep connections to the Harvard Sampler. At first, it is related to the human mind. More specifically, my argument include brain's information processing part. In Harvard Sampler also, two parts of information processing have already been distinguished. However, I thought that the ambiguity of their boundary still exists and therefore, there would be other hidden level exists. As a result, my research can replace more plentiful information to Harvard Sampler.

      • Preconsious plays a role as a brigde.
What I hope to learn from this source:
      • More specific details about Human mind and information processing levels.
      Notes

      • Division into three types - The top is conscious and middle is preconscious(subconscious) and bottom is unconscious. (in this picture, unconscious processing is omitted)
      • Preconscious level includes those things - Memories, stored knowledge.

      Week 2. Research proposal

The Topic : Is there any middle process between

      'conscious' processing and 'unconscious' processing?

      • My argument is that there is middle process between conscious processing and unconscious processing.

      What is my current topic?
The topic what I want to research about is 'Is there any middle process between conscious processing and unconscious processing?'
Therefore, my final essay will be written based on comparison between two processes of information processing and a middle process which would connect two.

      What are my guiding questions?

I am curious about human brain's information processing. According to Harvard sample, there are two ways of brain's information processing. One is conscious processing and another is unconscious processing. The author almost surely distinguished two parts however, when I research about it I realized another novel idea that there would be a middle process between two. So I want to know explicit differences of conscious processing and unconscious processing and which middle process can connect them.

      What are my current thoughts?
Actually, I have little knowledge about this part (human mind) because I have never thought about that. However while reading a book, Harvard Sampler, I knew some information about brain's information processing although I agree with some, disagree with other part. I think there would be a middle process which connects conscious processing and unconscious processing. In other words, they are not 100 percent distinguished so the boundary is a little ambiguous. Therefore I think a middle process which fill up the gap between two is necessary.

      What is the opposition?

Some opponents may say that brain's information processing can only be divided into two ways -conscious and unconscious processing.- However, the concepts are too enormous and vast to define whole concepts in two ways. Surely, another process would exist between two. Some concepts may be included in this part.

      Week 1. Research question

      The topic : Human mind

      1. What is the limitation which can be controlled by human will power?

      2. Why human think themselves they are over an average in faculty?
      3. Is a human clone the same with human perfectly?
      4. What elements make human pay attention to someone?
      5. Is there any middle process between 'consciousness' and 'unconsciousness'?
